Following vs. Following

So Blogworld expo was an absolute blast, met up with a lot of friends and met some new ones as well.

One of the things that came up a lot was following people online.    We all do it, right?  But what is the definition of follow?

I think everyone takes the literal technical meaning of following way too far.   For example.  X follows 3,400 people on Twitter.   Well, not really.

How many of those people do they really follow follow, as in pay attention to and get value from or interact with?   Only they can answer that.

People wear their followers and the people they follow as a badge of sorts, as a way to show how important or influential they are.   And I’m not really sure why.

I’m not sure how many people “follow” me on Twitter, but I’m guessing about 20 people only really pay attention to stuff that I say, and I appreciate that.   Maybe more are paying partial attention to me, but they’re definitely not “following following” me.

What are your thoughts?  How many people do you REALLY follow, and how many people REALLY follow you?

Quality vs. Quantity.   I’ll take the Quality please.

Now, that doesn’t mean that I value having lots of followers on Twitter, or Facebook or anything.  That’s fine.   I’m just trying to figure out the true definition of Following, so help me out!
